Hallo guys
I am Doris. A few people call me Dodo and I am a GBC (German born Chinese), i.e. I was born in Germany, but due to my look people think I am completely Chinese. I wrote a blog to share my experience in South Korea as an exchange student and I hope you enjoy reading it. My home university is the University of Hamburg, where I study Chemistry. I got a great opportunity to be an exchange student at a privileged university, the Seoul National University (SNU), for four months. During that time I met amazing people, who I became friends with. I met obviously many Koreans and also other exchange students from various countries. However there were uncountable times, when people thought I was Korean. German exchange students talked to me in English as well as Koreans just kept talking to me in Korean. It is both a boon and a bane. I had an easier access to be involved in activities here, but I could not understand anything what the Koreans were saying to me. I have to emphasize that Korean are very shy in talking in English. So when you are lost and you tried to ask a Korean in English, but they were trying to avoid you, do not get mad or frustrated. They are just to shy in talking in English. It is normal. Besides, Korean do not understand neither irony nor sarcasm. They take the things you say seriously. So pay attention in what you are saying. In addition, I think that Koreans are the most honest people. One day, I just noticed that my backpack was still opened, but everything remained inside.
Overall, it is totally worth coming to South Korea.
